Slate Flagstone: Indoors & Outdoors

Slate flagstone is a favorite natural stone material used in many homes because of its durability, versatility, and rustic appearance. The unique textures and shapes of these pieces make it a great choice for outdoor walkways and patios, but it looks just as great when you want to bring the outdoors in.

What is Slate Flagstone?

Slate is a type of flagstone made from shale, a metamorphized sedimentary rock. The resulting stone is durable and naturally split into thin layers, making it ideal for pavers. These pieces are typically flat, irregularly shaped slabs of slate that vary in thickness and size, offering a rustic, natural appearance.

At Garden State Soapstone, Slate, and Wood Countertops, we offer 2 different types of irregular slate flagstone:

Valley Run Grade is ¾” to 1” thick slate with saw cuts on up to two sides. Because of the irregular pattern, it offers a rustic look and random pattern for your flooring and fireplace surround.

Quarry Run Grade slate flagstone can be ¾” to 1” thick or 3/8” to ½” thick, giving you more options depending on the final application. These pieces are all rectangular with saw cuts across the grain and along the grain to provide more uniform edges and thicknesses.

Using Slate Flagstone in Outdoor Walkways

Slate flagstone’s most common application is in outdoor walkways. Here are a few reasons why it makes a great choice:

  1. Durability: Slate is a highly durable stone that can withstand the elements, making it perfect for the outdoors. It’s resistant to cracking and weathering, ensuring your walkway will remain intact year after year.
  2. Slip Resistance: Slate’s naturally rough texture provides excellent slip resistance, making it a safe choice for walkways, even in wet or icy conditions.
  3. Aesthetic: The irregular shapes and varying colors of slate flagstone pavers create a visually appealing, organic look that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Whether you’re creating a winding garden path or a straight walkway to your front door, slate adds a touch of elegance and charm.
  4. Low Maintenance: Once installed, slate flagstone requires minimal maintenance. Regular sweeping and occasional power washing are typically all you need to keep your walkway looking its best.
  5. Design Flexibility: Slate flagstone can be laid in a variety of patterns, from simple, straight lines to more irregular layouts. Your installer may offer multiple layouts to create a unique, custom look that suits your personal style.

Enhancing Your Patio with Slate Flagstone

If you’re building a patio, slate flagstone can work well for the pavers with either irregular or more uniform choices for your floor:

  1. Elegant Appearance: Slate’s natural texture gives patios a sophisticated yet organic feel. Whether you’re aiming for a rustic, traditional look or a sleek, modern design, slate flagstone can help you achieve your vision.
  2. Heat Resistance: Unlike some other stones, slate stays relatively cool underfoot, even in direct sunlight. This makes it a comfortable option for patios, where you or your guests may walk barefoot in the summer.
  3. Versatility: Patios using slate flagstone tile have several layout options. The less expensive Valley Run option allows for a random tile layout, while the Quarry Run Grade offers a more traditional, uniform look.
  4. Durability in All Climates: Slate is water-resistant and holds up well in all weather conditions, making it a reliable choice for patios in any climate. It won’t crack in freeze-thaw conditions, and its durability ensures that your patio will remain beautiful and functional every summer.

Bringing Slate Flagstone Indoors

While slate flagstone is often associated with outdoor applications, it can also be used inside for a rustic look. Here are some creative ways to incorporate slate flagstone pavers into your home’s design:

  1. Entryways and Mudrooms: Slate flagstone’s durability and slip resistance make it ideal flooring for high-traffic areas like entryways and mudrooms. Its natural beauty creates a welcoming first impression while enduring daily use.
  2. Interior Flooring: Slate flagstone can be used as flooring throughout the home, particularly in areas like kitchens and bathrooms where moisture resistance is important. Its natural, non-slip surface makes it a safe and stylish choice for these spaces.
